A man who stole a car from a Ventura car dealership was charged with grand theft after being arrested in Santa Barbara County. Officers there noticed a known local drug user driving a brand new Honda. They stopped the vehicle, and the man walked away.
Officers determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day from Ventura County. Officers attempted to arrest the driver, Shane Hale, but he fled the scene. He jumped into the ocean and swam about a quarter-mile before being picked up by harbormaster officers. Hale was initially taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, then booked into the Santa Barbara Jail. In addition to grand theft, Hale was charged with resisting arrest. He was also detained on a warrant from San Luis Obispo County.
