California Department of Insurance investigators charged nine people with fraud, following the discovery of a complex fraudulent billing scheme targeting more than 200 workers’ compensation insurers and self-insured employers in Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego and Los Angeles counties.

According to investigators, family-owned G&G Interpreting billed for Spanish translation services allegedly rendered at health clinics where the majority of the staffs were fluent in Spanish. Additionally, the company billed for translation services for 13 physicians who were fluent in Spanish. Investigators discovered more than 83,000 instances of fraud where the firm claimed to have provided translation services exceeding 12 hours per day at individual sites, including times when the sites were not even open.
In one instance of fraud, the company billed the state nearly $500,000 for interpretation services allegedly performed by a person who was incarcerated at the time.
