Actor Columbus Short, who is best known for his role in ABC’s hit prime-time drama Scandal, is facing up to 4 years in prison for a bar fight that occurred in March. According to reports, the Scandal star was attending an engagement party at Gabe’s Bar & Grill in Los Angeles, California, when the other man — who isn’t named — began a verbal altercation with the star. Short responded by punching him in the face before leaving the scene.
TMZ reports that the unnamed instigator said something along the lines of “You might be richer than me but I get my girls to buy me everything I want including your wife,” which set Short off into a violent rage. Short allegedly came up behind the man and punched in the face, knocking him down to the ground and rendering him unconscious for several minutes. Patrons at Gabe’s Bar & Grill say Short quickly left the scene before medics and the police arrived.
Once the ambulance arrived at the bar, they took the battered man to a nearby hospital where he was treated for a broken nose. Following the bar brawl, the judge issued a warrant for Short’s arrest on a single charge of felony battery (the charge is a felony because it resulted in serious bodily injury). If convicted, Short faces up to 4 years in prison.
The Claremont Police Department took Short into custody last week, at which point he was released on $50,000 bond. Short has not addressed allegations of the assault since his arrest.
Of course, this isn’t the first time the Scandal star has experienced a run in with the law. According to TMZ, Short punched a man in 2010 while playing a game of basketball, knocking out several of the man’s teeth.
With Scandal being one of ABC’s biggest shows, producers are surely left scrambling to think of ideas and solutions to this problem. If Short is locked up behind bars — even for a portion of the maximum 4-year sentence — it could place the entire show in jeopardy.
Short made his acting debut as a dancer in the film You Got Served. He also starred in Accepted, Save The Last Dance 2, Stomp The Yard, ER, Judging Amy and several other movies and television shows. Short’s latest project is ABC’s Scandal, which began in 2012 and is currently on its third season.
