Fraud Lands Former Simi Valley Police Officer in Jail
A former Simi Valley police officer accused of time-card fraud will be marking time in the Ventura County Jail. A judge recently sentenced the officer to 300 days in jail for stealing more than $100,000 in phony overtime wages.

The former officer pleaded no contest to one count of attempted grand theft and four counts of grand theft. At his sentencing, he acknowledged responsibility for his actions. According to investigators, the officer began falsifying his time card as early as 2009. The charges stem from false time reports between 2014 and September 2017. Attorneys for the city say the theft amounted to more than $102,000. The City could not seek charges dating back to 2009 because the statute of limitations on the crimes expired.

Initially, a watch commander noted a discrepancy between the officer’s time card and his reported shifts. That led to a more intensive investigation of the officer’s time reports. The officer began working for the department in 2008 and was named Officer of the Year in 2012. The officer has already made full financial restitution to the City.
