A former Thousand Oaks insurance agent will spend four months in jail for embezzlement . According to prosecutors, the man stole nearly $190,000 in veterans’ benefits. He pleaded guilty to one count of felony embezzlement and one count of false impersonation. Authorities say the man used senior clients’ identities to apply for and divert veterans’ benefits to himself.
Riverside County authorities arrested the man earlier this year. Investigators say that the man falsely presented himself as a financial planner. He told widows that he worked with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and applied for survivors’ benefits on their behalf.
He then diverted the money to his own personal accounts. The California Department of Insurance immediately suspended the man’s license. In addition to the four-month jail term, the man must complete 36 months of probation. He must also pay restitution to his victims.
