Embezzlement Of Tips Lands Camarillo Restaurant Manager in Jail
A former restaurant manager will spend four years in jail for embezzlement . The man, who is a Camarillo resident, pleaded guilty to stealing tips from the restaurant’s wait staff.

The alleged thefts occurred between March 2014 and July 2017. The defendant worked as a restaurant manager and also a supervisor at the restaurant’s winery. To steal from the restaurant, the man manipulated the restaurant’s register system. He devised a way to make it appear that customers paid bills with phony gift cards. When customers paid in cash, he would void the payment, then keep the cash. He also stole cash tips from the wait staff.

In February, the man pleaded guilty to four counts of grand theft. Investigators estimate that the man stole more than $114,000 during his employment. The judge sentenced the man to 16 months of incarceration. He will then serve the remainder of his sentence on a supervised release. The judge also ordered the man to pay restitution to the restaurant and the affected servers.

Embezzlement is a crime of opportunity. These cases receive a lot of attention because they often involve large dollar amounts. While victims want to see justice done, “justice” means different things to different people. Often, the first priority for a victim is restitution. An experienced defense attorney knows that long prison terms frustrate opportunities for restitution. An aggressive attorney’s preferred strategy will involve getting charges reduced or dropped. When that’s not possible, the attorney will work toward a sentence that minimizes incarceration and maximizes restitution opportunities.
