A Ventura County judge served a former Simi Valley bartender a 7 month sentence for embezzlement . The man worked for a local restaurant and discovered that he could load a gift card with value, then cancel the sale. The loaded value would remain on the card.
The man and another co-worker used the scheme successfully for more than two years. After loading and canceling gift card transactions, the pair would pocket cash sales and used the fraudulent gift cards to pay for meals. The pair ran the scam between 2011 and 2013. In October, a judge sentenced the co-worker to 7 months in jail, three years’ probation and restitution of more than $50,000.
In addition to the jail sentence, the judge sentenced the Van Nuys man to five years’ probation and ordered restitution of $75,000. The judge also ordered the man to report to the Ventura County Jail to begin serving his sentence on February 16.
