A DUI in Ventura just got more expensive. Earlier this week, county supervisors voted to increase the fees for required DUI classes. The increase of 11%-12%, is the first rate hike since 2009. The Ventura County Board of Supervisors is attempting to cover a $500,000 shortfall in the program’s budget. The move will generate about $150,000 this fiscal year. It is also expected to generate $524,000 next fiscal year.
The hike in fees is being combined with other spending cuts in the program. The move allows supervisors to avoid layoffs. Fewer enrollments in the program resulted in a funding shortfall. According to county arrest records, the number of DUI arrests has fallen in Ventura County by about one-third since 2009. Statewide, DUI arrests dropped by about 12% between 2003 and 2013.
The cost of the mandatory DUI class for first time offenders will rise $31 for a 12-hour program. The 12-hour program will now cost $301. Offenders who must complete a nine-month program will pay $220 more. The nine-month program will now cost $2,071.

Increased fees and fines are only one part of the cost of a drunk driving conviction. The DMV will immediately suspend your driver license. This occurs at the time of your arrest. The criminal process can apply additional suspensions, jail time, fines, interlock devices, driver reeducation fees, reinstatement fees and other sanctions. Additionally, you can expect the cost of your car insurance to rise significantly following an impaired driving conviction.
When you can avoid a conviction for impaired driving, it makes sense to do so. While drunk driving is most often charged as a misdemeanor, that doesn’t mean it’s not a serious matter. A drunk driving conviction can damage your finances and interfere with your livelihood. Don’t risk a drunk driving conviction on your record!
